In children’s stories, comics etc, people would eat/ drink some stuff that would give them great strength/ supernatural powers. Who can forget the escapades of Asterix and co, who would drink magic potion prepared by druit Getafix that would give them supernatural powers which they would use to thrash Roman legionnaires.
In one Asterix comics, set in Britain, Tea would substitute for magic potion for the ancient British.
In Hindi movies, “paan” serves similar purpose. In “Don” (1978), Amitabh Bachchan, after partaking of paan would be ready to fight off the baddies single handedly. What a “paan” could do to him is detailed in this evergreen superhit dance song as well, namely Khai ke paan banaraswaala (Don).
This was not the first “paan” song in Hindi films of course. There have been quite a few of them, though none of them could gain the kind of popularity that this “Don” (1978) song acquired, or may be they did, but they have been forgotten with time.
For instance, one of the very first “paan” songs in HFM was in “Najma”(1943) which was sung by Ashok Kumar. It was Mujhe jo khilaate hain. This song became so popular during its time that it earned Ashok Kumar Rs 8000/- as royalty, which was a huge sum those days.
In 1943 itself, there was another popular “paan” song from “Aabroo” that went Poone se laayi paan re .
In 1943 itself, there was yet another “paan” song, viz. Paanon waali khila de raseela sa paan in “Sawaal”.
The decade of 1950s saw this song Meri jaan tum gair ko paan khilaaya na karo from “Khandaan”(1955).
Then there is this song, peddling paan Aana o bhai jaan khilaaun paan from “Taxi Stand” (1958).
Not just men, even ladies would eat “paan” in Hindi movies as testified in this song from “Baaraat” (1960)- Zaalim kehna maan lachakti chal na khaa ke paan
And men, including sainyyaa, eat “paan” as detailed in this famous “Teesri Kasam”(1966) song- Paan khaaye sainyya hamaaro .
Then there was this “Taxi Driver”(1973) song- Kha kar toone paan.
In Hindi movies, there would be “saaqi” (bar girl) to serve “sharaab” to the clients. In real life, I have not seen ladies selling “Paan”, but in Hindi movies, ladies are preferred by movie makers when it comes to selling paans. Two of the songs mentioned above indeed have ladies selling this stuff.
The song under discussion is a “paan” song and here too it is a lady (“Paan” girl ?) who is selling “paan”. And this paan has magical effects on the gentlemen who help themselves with this stuff.
This song is from “Ustaad Pedro” (1951). It is sung by Lata amnd C Ramchandra. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.
This is a rare song.l It is the eighth and final song from “Ustaad Pedro” (1951) to appear in the song. Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections as applicable.
With this song, “Ustaad Pedro” (1951) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Lyrics
tere dil pe jaadoo kar gaya
o tere dil pe jaadoo kar gaya re
mera paan muhabbat waala
mera paan muhabbat waala
mere pyaar ki khushboo katthe mein
Dil chhupa hai paan ke patte mein
meri aahon ki thhandak is mein padi
mere nakhron ka pada masaala
meri aahon ki thhandak is mein padi
mere nakhro ka pada masaala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
tere dil pe jaadoo kar gaya re
mera paan muhabbat waala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
tere pug dagmag sar jhoom raha
tera paan munh choom raha
tere pug dagmag sar jhoom raha
tera paan munh choom raha
tere kadam zameen se ukhad rahe
mera nikal raha deewaala
tere kadam zameen se ukhad rahe
mera nikal raha deewaala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
tere dil pe jaadoo kar gaya re
mera paan muhabbat waala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
meri nazren sharam se jhukin
kuchh kehne se hain rukin
mujhe tukar tukar kyun takta hai
kya daal mein hai kuchh kaala
mujhe tukar tukar kyun takta hai
kya daal mein hai kuchh kaala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
tere dil pe jaadoo kar gaya re
mera paan muhabbat waala
mera paan muhabbat waala re
mera paan muhabbat waala
