Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 18

Today’s song “Saaqiyaa Saaquiyaa Aankhon Se Jaam Pila De” by Asha Bhosle is another rare/rarely heard song from the 1960s.

The 1967 Hindi historical drama “Nawab Sirajuddaula” is a film based on the life and times of Siraj ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal. The film chronicles the political intrigue, betrayal, and colonial conspiracy that led to one of the most significant events in Indian history — the Battle of Plassey in 1757.

Set in mid-18th century Bengal, the film’s story & credits are given in a post by our own Sudhir Ji.

Today’s song is a classic example of the ghazal-style mujra popular in historical and period films of the 1960s. It combines lyrical richness with expressive performance, blending poetry, sensuality, and traditional Indian classical melodies.

Rajah Mehdi Ali Khan’s words are deeply poetic and sensuous. The use of Persian and Urdu influences (“jaam,” “saaqi,” “nazar”) brings an old-world charm that fits the 18th-century Nawabi setting.

Asha Bhosle delivers the song with her characteristic finesse — controlled, delicate, and emotionally nuanced. She brings out the flirtation and melancholy in the lyrics without overt dramatization, which elevates the ghazal into something both elegant and emotionally resonant.

Madan Mohan’s music combines classical Indian instruments like tabla, sitar, and sarangi, with soft orchestration.
