Today’s song is from the film Gumashta-1951. It is a 2-part song, sung by Shamshad Begum and chorus. The cast of the film was Nigar Sultana, Kuldeep Kaur, Wasti, Baby Tabassum, Husn Banu, Murad, Tiwari, W.M.Khan, M.Ismail, Noorjahan Sr, Mirza Musharraf etc etc.
The year 1951 was a mixed affair. After the end of II WW and especially after our Independence, there was a flood of people with Black money to produce films, earn profits and convert Black money to white money. This caused several films of low quality to be made. Some of them tried to make copies of Hollywood films too. Luckily, everything wasn’t that bad and few good films also were made.
AWARA by Raj Kapoor came as a cool breeze in hot times. Everything about it was good, especially the acting and music impressed people. This film was released in Russia as “BROTHIYAGA” . It was sold there for Rs. 50,000, a big amount in those days.
HUM LOG, starring Balraj Sahni and Nutan – as realistic film of the Indian middle class. India has always been a country with the biggest size of middle class in the world.
ALBELA by Bhagwan and C.Ramchandra became an evergreen popular film. This was the high point of Bhagwan’s career, which he could never surpass in his lifetime.
BAAZI from Navketan fulfilled a pact between Dev Anand and Guru Dutt, made during their early careers, while with Prabhat Film co. Both rose high with this film.
DEEDAR– an unusual film of love story, enacted by Dilip Kumar and Nargis.
AANDOLAN made by Filmistan and enacted by Kishore Kumar was an excellent Docu-Commercial film with good content and music by Hemant Kumar for his first Hindi film as a Music Director.
AFSANA – a story of good and bad twins, featuring Ashok Kumar and Veena.
BAHAR – introducing Vyjayantimala, made by AVM with excellent Dances and Songs.
NAUJAWAN – age old story of the rich and the poor and film JAADU – a costume film, of Nalini Jaywant were hit films due to good music.
NAGEENA – a mystery and romance that had Pakistan returned Nasir Khan and a pre-adult Nutan.
Some important events of 1951 were….
1) Launch of ‘Screen’ weekly.
2) S.K.Patil’s report on the film industry.
3) Establishment of the Film Federation of India and Central Board of Censors in Bombay. and
4) First Nepali film ‘ Harishchandra’.
Some other notable films of 1951 were Pyar ki Baaten, Aaram, Actor, Baadal, Bade bhaiya, Bedardi( Nimmi sang her only Hindi Film song in it), Buzdil, Daaman, Dholak, Kali Ghata, Khazana, Madhosh, Malhar, Naadaan, Sagai, Sanam, Shabistan (actor Shyam died on the sets) and Taraana. In addition 18 Mythological films were also made.
In today’s film cast you find the name ” Noorjahan “. This was the name which actually prompted me to think seriously about the artists who had similar names and caused confusion. While doing research work on this problem for about a year or so and collecting enough authentic data to start my series for such artists, I coined the Title “SAME NAME CONFUSION”. This has now been accepted unopposed by Film Historians.
Noorjehan-Sr.’s real name was Zebunnisa, but since there were already many Zebs in the film line, she took the name of Noorjehan. She was from a Tawayaf family of Lahore. She started with Silent film Gulnar-1930,then came All for love, chandramani, Hind ke tare, Shaliwahan etc. After doing about 10 silent films, she first appeared in a Talkie Mirza Sahibaan-1933. (The silent films were produced till sept.1934).
She was actually not a professional singer, but in those days it was compulsory for the Lady actors to sing songs also, since playback had not started. That is the reason she sang also. She did about 90 Talkie films like patit pawan, Kala wagh, Kismet ki kasauti, Vaaman avtaar, Delhi Express, Jaane aalam, karvaan e husn, Rangeela Nawab, Sati toral, Stree dharma, Romantic India, Shaahu chor, tope ka Gola, Adarsh Mahila etc. After 1937, she did not get major roles and songs also diminished. Her last film was Anarkali-53.
The confusion causing films of Noorjehan Sr. are….
1941- Radhika- sang 2 songs, Sasural- 3 songs, Ummeed-1 song. She also worked in Sikander and Red signal.
1942- Fariyaad,Dhiraj- sang 1 song. Also acted in Chandni
1943- Adab Arz-sang 1 song. Also acted in Vish kanya
1944-No film
1945-Ghazal
1946-Jadugar, Eight days, Gwalan, Maharana Pratap, Sofia, Talwarwala
1947- Aabida, Do Bhai, Meerabai.
After retirement from films, she lived in Bombay, Dadar area. She knew Driving, so she became a Lady Driver/ instructor in a Driving School, to sustain for some time. Thereafter no information on her.
Coming back to today’s song. Today, after a long time, I have come across a Parody song, that too in 2- parts, means Double Dhamaka ! What is a Parody song ?
In Hindi films we find a variety of songs. Love songs, Happy songs, Sad songs, Comedy songs, Birthday songs, Patriotic songs, Chorus songs, Prayers, Lories, Bhajans and many more types.
However there is one type of songs which is a sure hit with all viewers and that is a PARODY SONG (in Hindi it is called VIDAMBAN song). Normally a Parody song is equated with a medley of old popular song tunes, set to new Lyrics, enacted by someone else.
While this is right to a great extent, the actual definition of a Parody song is ” A song which involves changing or copying well known musical ideas or lyrics or copying a particular style of a composer or an actor or even a general twisted style of Music ”
Many songs fall in this wide category. The very FIRST Parody song in Hindi films came as early as 1936. It came from a film called ” Sunehara Sansaar”-1936. It was a Parody of a famous patriotic song by Dr.Iqbal-” Saare jahan se achha Hindostan hamara…” The parody song was ‘ Saare jahan se achha saabun bana hamara, hum kishtiyan hai iski…’ The lyricist was Vijay Kumar, B.A. and the Music Director was K C Dey.
When the song was released, instead of becoming popular, it drew people’s ire for distorting a patriotic song. There was criticism and several protests.
Another Music Director Master Mohd. (who was well known for composing many patriotic songs in those days, in his films) decided to make a Parody of K C Dey’s famous song, ‘Jao jao aye mere sadhu…’ from Pooran Bhagat-1933. He included this parody song in same year in his film ‘ Miss frontier Mail ‘-1936. The lyrics for this song were- gaao gaao aye mere aye mere sadhu…’. It was sung by Minu the Mystique in the film. He was a Parsi theatre singer. This Minu was actually Minoo Cooper, a regular singer in Bombay city Parsi circles. He used to sing in many Hotels in those days. He has also sung a few more songs in Hindi films later.
This retaliatory Parody song was well received by the audience and it became popular too. So, parody songs entered Hindi films with an interesting History behind them !
I can recall that during our younger days, it was our hobby to twist the popular songs with comic lyrics. Even today I still remember a few of them…
1) Jiya beqarar hai
Nargis ko bukhar hai,
Aja be Dilip kumar
tera intejar hai.
2) Dhoti chhod ke mat jaana
Dhoti saath mein le jaana
kasam tujhe mere Pehelwanki….
3) Bhaiya mere saambar mein Idli na dubaana
4) Ek saal pehle, tum to Bekaar the
Gadhe pe sawar the,
aaj bhi ho, aur kal bhi rahoge…
5) De gayi bill, budhiya dukaan ki… etc etc
I am sure many of the readers also must have done this, in their times. These song Parodies added spice to our lives. So when some film had a Parody song, we used to see that film without fail ! Making a Parody song is one of the easiest matters for the Music Directors and most of the Music Directors have resorted to Parody songs at least once, except probably serious composers like Naushad.
So, here is a Double barrel Parody song by Shamshad Begum and Chorus. Few popular songs in this Parody song can be easily identified. Enjoy this 74 year old Parody Song….

gaaon kee lailaa ke haathhon pit jaayen

ik baar idhhar bhee tak tak tak
dil karne laga hai dhak dhak dhak
anjaam hamaaraa kyaa hogaa

anjaam tumhaaraa ye hogaa
ke sar mein padenge dande
armaan tumhaare ik dande mein
ho jaayenge thhande
ho ho ho ho
prem nagar mein aane waale
dandon se kab darte hain
ae jee dandon se kab darte hain
hum bhanwre hain ras ke lobhee
phoolon se ulfat karte hain

ik baar idhhar bhee tak tak tak
dil karne laga hai dhak dhak dhak
anjaam hamaaraa kyaa hogaa
haay kya hogaa
bolo kya hogaa
anjaam tumhaaraa ye hogaa
