98th birth anniversary of Mohammed Rafi sahab

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 11

How the human mind works and the vagaries of human memory system, the scientists are still figuring out. I, for one, am very grateful that my memory brings forth to the mind a significant Rafi song to write a post at the most unexpected moment.

Since last few months, things have been very hectic at the domestic front, for no real tangible reason. They just are somewhat crazy, with stress levels running high on the work front too. Family events, travels notwithstanding, I should have written a few more posts this year, if only I could focus. So much so that I was on the verge of advising the HOD that the office needs a “self-help-stress management” “how to make the office atmosphere positive” “How to have healthy work relations with colleagues” sort of workshops/seminar. Not that I am going to do any such thing as advising the HOD, at-least I am trying not to. The thing is, a close friend expressed an opinion, if any such events are organised at the office, this will add to the stress levels of the already stressed-out officers.

I could also suggest some soothing music to be played on the non-existing PA system. There really are many classic music compositions, human civilization has produced. Many of them are having soothing qualities, some have the capacity to amaze the listener, that something like this could be created. There are many amazing and wonderful things, that we human can be grateful for. Sounds of music is one of them. The simplest things in life, which are free are to be valued and be thankful for. I thought the pandemic and tribulations it brought to humans, would make us all better humans, and teach us thankfulness, for many of the blessings which we all take to granted.

Post pandemic, as the world is back to normal, the massive restrictions during 2020 & 2021 are all but forgotten, which seem like a bad dream. Only sometimes I think of those days when work from home was possible, that was one advantage.

I honestly feel, it has had an impact on the evolution of humans. It has had huge psychological impact on young kids and elders. It is to be hoped that kids with the resilience of the young, will get past this bad dream. But the reminders of the bad dream are everywhere around us. The other day, I saw those round circles painted on the floor outside a supermarket. We were made to stand in queue to buy groceries, only a few people allowed inside at a time, to buy essentials for gods sake. If this was not a trial of psychological bondage training imparted to masses, then what was it? No wonder, humans, evolved after the pandemic are more disgruntled than before.

As the scientific community is grappling with the impact on the mental health (which is the new pandemic), lowered immunity in young and old, it is the responsibility and duty of able-minded people in the society to take great care, of their social surroundings, environment and individuals who may need a word or two, of care, of encouragement, of belief, of faith that things do not remain the same, they always change for the better.

No doubt that the research papers and thesis that come out on the impact of COVID – 19 on humanity, will point to the great stress it put on the psychological strength of the world’s populace. For this, the disease is not at fault, but the handling of the crisis, is the culprit. Having said this, I admit that being judgmental in hindsight is easy. But dealing with the aftermath is not going to be easy and it requires all the resilience of humanity.

I read about the voyager 1 & 2 sometime back and about the recordings of sounds to earth which they carried. With great hope I looked for the details of Indian songs in the 90 minutes music record. I found this Hindustani classical song is part of that.

Bhairavi: Jaat Kahan Ho Traditional Kesarbai Kerkar (vocals) with harmonium, Tanpura and tabla accompaniment Recorded in Bombay, April 1953 Hindustani Shastriya Sangeet (Indian classical music) 3:30

Hindustani classical music is an important component of sound of earth in all senses, so its inclusion in the above record is not a surprise. For our part, we have here a hindi film song which is a Hindustani classical song, by Mohammed Rafi Sahab. This is from the film Mrig Trishna(1975), written and composed by Shambhu Sen. This is a soothing, mental massage, critically acclaimed song. I was aware of the song and have heard it many times before today. I have also heard a great fan of Rafi Sahab, singing this song, and he was all praises for this rendition by the maestro. Obviously, he knows a great deal more about classical music than me. I had seen the song many times of TV too. So as soon as he said the mukhda before singing it, I was able to recollect even the filming of the song, and Hema Malini dancing to it. This was a few years ago. But today seeing the song again, I have also remembered reading somewhere, about the location shoot of the song. It is filmed at an actual location of some Haveli or fort is Rajasthan. The original art work and carpet and the carving in the pillars and jharokhas is visible in the hall.

Before starting this post I had checked and could not find the film Mrig Trishna (1975) in the list. But I just thought of checking it again, and now I find that 2 songs from this film are posted and this particular song is posted here.

So here we are, in the 99th year of Rafi Sahab, we are soon going to enter the 100th year of Rafi Sahab. I hope and pray, that we maintain the equilibrium as humanity and take inspiration from the personality of Rafi Sahab and his life’s principles.

Rafi Sahab, keep spreading happiness and peace to the world and beyond, even if the Voyager, has missed out on including your amazing voice. No doubt, as one of the super creations, Rafi sahab has made his contribution to this civilization and increased the ‘shobhaa’ of this ‘sansaar’.

I am posting this funny group song from the film Madhur Milan(1955), which the antithesis of Hindustani classical, which was my original idea for this post. Geeta Dutt and A. R. Ojha are giving company or having fun with Rafi sahab in the song composed by Bulo C. Rani. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Among the legendary associations, Geeta Dutt, is next to only Asha Bhonsle. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was also part of Madan Mohan’s team for a time. While Bulo C. Rani has composed many sweet renditions by Rafi sahab in early 50’s, some of which I have posted.

So we enjoy this social comic song by this team on this birth anniversary occasion.

Hullo Atuldom

This post is thanks to the morning programs aired by Radio Ceylon (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Prasar Bharati’s Vividh Bharati.

The first song that I heard this morning was from the 1967 Bharat Bhushan starrer “Taqdeer”; a song from “Gateway Of India” (1957) was just over. And Jyoti Parmarji announced that the segment was a tribute to yesteryear actor Bharat Bhushan (14th June 1920- 27th January 1992).

The next segment played songs from “Thokar” (1953), Taxi 555 (1958), “Saaranga” (1960) etc; and Jyotiji said that the segment was remembering Sardar Malik (13th January 1930- 27th January 2006).

I am sure if I had listened further, I would have heard some lovely songs of Zia Sarhadi Sahab (1917- 27th January 1997). This youtube link will give us the songs played in that segment.

Then around 9.30 a.m. I switched on to Vividh Bharati and I landed on their “aaj ke fankaar” and I discovered that today is LOIN’s birth anniversary too.

So many yesteryear populars’ anniversaries. So I set out on my favourite activity- trying to find a movie or song featuring at least two of those who are being remebered today. And I had my EUREKAAA!!!! moment sometime back.

Today we are having a song sung by Mohd. Rafi, written by Madan Mohan (not the music director, please note) & Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and composed by Sardar Malik. It is from the movie “Maa Ke Aansoo” (1959). It was a movie which had Hamid Ali Khan, Nalini Jaywant, Neelam, Lalita Pawar, Agha, Ajit Kumar etc. Dhirubhai Desai was the director and more details about the movie can be had in this post Meri jholi ko bhar de of December 27th, 2011. Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji has given a brief about the movie in the comments to the post.

I am sure that it is well-known that Hamid Ali Khan was popular as Ajit. He started as an extra in many of his initial films to feed himself. He changed his name to Ajit on the advise of Nanabhai Bhatt. and played the main protagonist in films till sometime in the 60s when he switched to playing character roles and was most sought after villain in movies of the late 60s and most of the 70s. His character in “Kalicharan” (1976) pompously called himself “LOIN” of course that was his way of pronouncing the word Lion; similarly his “Rabbert” for Robert, “Mona Darling” are all unforgettable.
He would have been 101 today.

Sardar Malik passed away this date in 2006. He was active in Hindi Films from late 1940s and gave music for nearly 600 songs. I could readily recollect all the songs that SLBC played this morning. I just thought I will mention here that his children and grand children are connected with the music industry as singers, music directors etc. I also feel like mentioning that Hasrat Jaipuri was his wife’s brother.

Song-Hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan (Maa Ke Aansoo)(1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Madan Mohan (lyricist), MD-Sardar Malik

Lyrics

aandhi mein gunaahon ka diya jal nahin sakta
jo bachke aa pahuncha hai
anjaam tera tere hi haathon mein hai naadaan

Allaah ka ye ghar to shaheedon ke liye hai
hai waqt sambhalne ka
sambhal jaa arre naadaaan
sambhal jaa arre naadaan
hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan

kya teri duaaon se falak hil nahin sakta
falak hil nahin sakta
is dar se jo tu chaahe to kya mil nahin sakta
to kya mil nahin sakta
thhak jaayega neki se buraayi ka ye toofaan
buraayi ka ye toofaan
hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan
hai badh ke farishton se bhi insaan teri shaan
khud ko zara pehchaan
tu khud ko zara pehchaan

This article is the 17500th song post for the blog.

Blog Day :

5335 Post No. : 17500 Movie Count :

4709

28 january 2023 saw song post number 17400 appearing on the blog. Today (25 february 2023) finds us reaching song post number 17500 on the blog.

Yes, this post is the 175th century post for the blog. It has come in 28 days, which equals the days taken for the previous century. So this year 2023 has seen two centuries, both clocked in 28 days apiece. It is a vast improvement over the average days taken for the blog centuries of last few years. We are still far off from the all time record of a century in 11 days (achieved in 2011) but things are looking up as far as Blog daily strike rate is concerned.

The blog century posts now a days are decided at the last moment. The previous century post number 17400 was decided at the last moment, on the very day on which the song was covered. This song post number 17500 is no different.

Song post number 17400 was a duet song. So is the case for this song post number 17500. But that is the only similarity between the two century posts.

Post number 17400 was a duet sung by two obscure singers. That was the only duet sung by the singers in Hindi movies. The singers in the duet song of this post number 17500 are both legends in Hindi playback singing.

This song under discussion in this post is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam.

Why them and no one else ? There are good reasons for that.

As things stand in HFM, there have been only eight pair of singers in the Golden era of HFM who have sung over hundred duets. Seven pair of such singers have already completed their centuries in the blog. Rafi and Shamshad Begam were the only pair who had not reached their century of duet songs in the blog. With this post, they join the list and the list gets completed.

Here is the list of centurion duet singers in HFM during the golden era of HFM :-

Singing pair Duet Songs in the blog Remarks
Rafi-Asha Bhonsle 561 This pair holds the Record for highest number of duet songs
Rafi-Lata 349 Second highest number of duets. Almost all their duets covered in the blog
Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle 268
Kishore Kumar-Lata 222
Mukesh-Lata 143
Rafi-Geeta Dutt 113
Rafi-Suman Kalyanpur 108
Shamshad Begam-Rafi 100 They reach 100 duets with this post

If one feels that there may be other pairs who may join the list in future, that is not the case. Among singers who were active during the golden era, the next duo with highest number of duets is Manna Dey-Lata Mangeshkar with 75. This figure represents their sum total of duets sung in HFM. All of them are already represented in the blog ! Likewise all duets sung by Talat Mehmood-Lata Mangeshkar (61) are already represented in the blog.

The song under discussion is from an obscure movie called “Noor e Yaman”(1956) also alternatively titled “Hatimtai Ka Beta”. This C grade movie was directed by Akkoo. The movie had Chitra, Juliaan, Ridkoo, Krishna Kumari, Heera Saawant, Sardar Mansoor, Ismail, Munshi Munakka, Bismillah, Mitthoo Mian, M. K. Hasan, Mohammed Ali, Mohammed Sandow, Abdulla, Korega, Yadav, Sukumar, Ratan Kumar, Raju, Sattar, Maqbool, Yusuf Azad Qawwal, Samar Roy, Habeeb, Shaikh Hassan, Babu Raaje, Adeeb, Wazir Mohammed Khan etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. They were sung by five singers, viz Shewan Rizvi, Yusuf Azad Qawwal, Shamshad Begum, Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle. These nine songs were penned by three lyricists viz Akhtar Romani, Sartaj Romani and Raja Mehndi Ali Khan.

The movie is making its debut in the blog with this song. This movie becomes the 110th movie of 1956 to find representation in the blog. The song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Bulo C Rani is the music director.

This song, an obscure song from an obscure movie, sounds like a forgotten gem. It is a song that deserves to be better known among music lovers.

Another blog century achieved. Time to take a fresh guard.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all who are fuelling the musical bandwagon in various ways and are helping it to reach newer and newer destinations with each passing days. May this bandwagon notch many more centuries and see many more interesting records en route.

Song-Jab teri nazar ke teer chale (Noor e Yaman)aka Hatimtai Ka Beta(1956) Singers-Rafi, Shamshad Begam, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Bulo C Rani

Lyrics

jab teri nazar ke teer chale
kuchh idhar gaye
kuchh udhar gaye

sab kidhar gaye
sab kidhar gaye

sab kidhar gaye

poochho jee jaa kar inka pata
phoolon se bahaaron se nazaaron se
aabsaaron se gulzaron se

bas bas bas bas bas bas bas
poocha hai maine inka pata

beemaaron se
bekaaron se lohaaron se
awaaron se ghamkhaaron se banjaaron se lakadhaaron se
lakadhaa aa aa aa aaro se
na jaane wo kidhar gaye

Nahin poochh mujhse zaalim

We observe that three movies (out of six) whose songs were covered on this date ten years ago have since been YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with three unYIPPEED movies that re eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (27 May 2023).

“Mastaani”(1955) was produced and directed by Dhirubhai Desai for Sharad Productions, Bombay. The movie had Nigar(Sultan), Manhar(Desai), Shahu Modak, Rathnamala, Niranjan Sharma, Agha, Suryakant,Seeta Bose, Santhosh Kumar, N.Bhushan, Dilip, Roop Kumar, Mishrilal, B.N.Bali etc in it. In addition there were guest appearances by Kamal Indira Bansal, Jankidass, Yashodhara and Bhagwan.

“Mastaani”(1955) had 12 songs in it. Four songs have been covered so far.

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and female chorus. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by B N Bali.

Only audio of the song is available. The song sounds like a “Tonga” song where a lady and her sahelis are riding a tonga, which is running a bit too fast for the lady who requests the gaadee waala to reduce the speed a bit. The song does not record the response of the tonga driver. It is the response of the sahelis only that is recorded in the song. 🙂

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2013-2023) – Song No.130
————————————————————————————–

On this date ten years ago (30 May 2013), three songs from three different movies (plus one Non film song) were covered in the blog. Here are the details:-

Post No Song Title Name of the movie Remarks
8147 O dilruba sun tujhpe mera dil nisaar hai Mastaani (1955) 5 songs covered out of 12 by now
8148 Tere poojan ko bhagwaan Shamshad Begam NFS(1934)
8149 Aap ne apna banaaya meharbaani aap ki Dulhan Ek Raat Ki(1966) Movie YIPPEED in the blog by now
8150 Le matki aaja Radha ri Do Dil (1947) Movie YIPPEED in the blog by now

We observe that two movies (out of three) whose songs were covered in the blog on this date ten years ago have since been YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with only one unYIPPEED movie that is eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (30 May 2023).

That BTYC eligible movie is “Mastaani”(1955).

“Mastaani”(1955) was produced and directed by Dhirubhai Desai for Sharad Productions, Bombay. The movie had Nigar(Sultan),Manhar(Desai), Shahu Modak, Rathnamala, Niranjan Sharma, Agha, Suryakant,Seeta Bose, Santhosh Kumar, N.Bhushan, Dilip, Roop Kumar, Mishrilal, B.N.Bali etc in it. In addition there were guest appearances by Kamal Indira Bansal, Jankidass, Yashodhara and Bhagwan.

“Mastaani”(1955) had 12 songs in it. Five songs have been covered so far.

Here is the sixth song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Some unidentified male voice utters “hoy hoy” a few times, but despite that, this song is very much a Shamshad Begam solo. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by B N Bali.

Only audio of the song is available. The song sounds like a dance song to me. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Today’s song is a comedy duet from the film Alibaba and 40 Thieves-1954.

Stories of Arabian Nights or 1001 Nights are so interesting that for many generations they have been a source of entertainment.Alibaba,Allauddin and Sindbad are the evergreen stories. Arabian Night stories evolved through a story which took place in Persia. King Shahriyar became a woman hater after he found that his wife was unfaithful to him. He not only killed her,but he started marrying a new girl every time and on the second day of Marriage the wife would be killed to avoid unfaithfulness.

The legend says that a beautiful young daughter of the Vizier-Scheherazade decided to marry the king Shahriyar, against wishes of her family. On the first night of marriage, she started telling him a story which she left unfinished. Curious to know the story’s end,the king postponed her killing. On every night Scheherazade employed the same technique-keeping the story unfinished. Thus she continued 1001 stories on 1001 nights. Finally the king changed his opinion and pardoned his wife.

During our school days stories of Alibaba, Sindbad,Allauddin and his magic lamp, Hatimtai, Gulbakawali and such other stories enchanted us. It seemed fantastic reading them. I doubt very much if today’s school children read these stories. Maybe only a few will be familiar with these names. Naturally, during our young age, there were many films also made on these stories.

These stories included Historical stories, love tales, tragedies.comedies, poems, eroticas, stories of Jinn, ghosts and apes,Sorcerers, magicians etc etc. places like Basara,Istanbul,Baghdad etc were frequently mentioned in these stories. A lot of films were made on different popular characters of Arabian Nights. Here is a short history of films made, it may not be complete but surely is an indicator of how the Indian film industry took advantage of readymade interesting stories. These stories were liked by not only children, but also millions of adults – like me, for example.

A cursory look at the Film Title Index-1913 to 2012 by Hamraz ji tells us that the most popular stories are on Allauddin, Alibaba and Sinbad as well as Gul E Bakavli, besides films on other not so well known characters. In the Silent film era, films on Alibaba were made in 1927 (2films), Allauddin in 1927 (2), 1928,1931 Sindbad in 1930(2) and Arabian Nights-1930. During the Talkie films, the first film on Alibaba was in 1932, then in 40,46,54(2),66,76,77,80 and 2004. On Aladdin in 35, 36, 39,41, 49,52 (2), 55, 57,58,66,78, 82(2). On Sindbad in 46(2),52(2),58,65 and 2000.

As always, the creative heads in the story departments of filmmakers invented titles like Alladin ka Beta, Alladin ki Beti, Aladdin and Laila. Similarly son and daughter were gifted to Alibaba and Sinbad and films made on them. The funniest title was ” Sindbad, Alibaba and Allauddin “-1965 ! On a quick check of HFGK entries for the 1940s decade we find that as many as 9 films were made in 1946 alone on these characters. Added were Baghdad ka chor, Hoor E Baghdad, Sher E Baghdad, Arab ka chand and Shah E Misr-in which actor Ajit debuted with his real name Hamid.

Most of these stories took place in the Middle East cities which were land locked. However, one character – Sindbad was a sailor and his stories of adventures and voyages to magical, strange and unbelievable places were mind boggling. He was equally popular as Alibaba and Allauddin.

Film Alibaba and 40 Thieves-1954 was made by Basant Pictures and it was directed by its owner Homi Wadia. The music was by the pair of S.N.Tripathi and Chitragupt. In his initial days, Chitragupt had been Tripathi’s assistant for a few years. He has also sung some songs under his baton. This film was first censored on 10-3-1954 as a B & W film. However, its colour version was again censored on 22-11-1956.

A Tamil remake of this film was made in 1956 by Basant pictures with local stars. S. Dakshinmoorthy had done the music orchestration of the Tamil songs which had used all tunes from its Hindi original. The cast of the Hindi film was Shakeela, Mahipal, B.M. Vyas, S.N.Tripathi, Maruti, Sharda Deulkar, Shalini, Ismail, Dalpat, Azeem, Sardar Mansoor and many more. The original story as appeared in “The Arabian Nights’ was adapted by J.B.H.Wadia, by changing its last part of events. His name is given as the Story Writer in the film credits. Finally, the story of the film was like this……..

Alibaba (Mahipal) lives in the city of Dil Pazir. His dancer friend Marjina (Shakila) notices that he pays great attention to his sister Salma (Shalini), after his elder brother Qasim (S.N.Tripathi) has usurped all his ancestral property. His friend Abboo (Maruti) loves Sitara (Sharda Deulkar), Salma’s companion.

When Alibaba goes to the jungle for wood cutting, he accidentally sees the dacoit Abu Hasan (B.M.Vyas) and notes the password to get into his cave of treasure. In the night, Alibaba quietly opens the cave door with the password and collects a lot of wealth and becomes rich. The cunning wife of his brother comes to know and gets him arrested. Margina cleverly gets Alibaba out of jail and they run away with Salma and Abboo.
Qasim goes into the cave, collects wealth but at the time of leaving forgets the password and is stuck inside. Abu Hasan comes and kills Qasim, severing his head from body. Alibaba sees this in his next visit to the cave and brings the dead body parts to his house. Marjina brings a blindfolded tailor who sews the body with the head. This news reached Abu Hasan. To corner and kill Alibaba, he visits his house as a Saudagar along with his 40 thieves hidden in sacks. Marjina recognises him and with the help of Sitara and Abboo, they throw all sacks in a deep valley killing all thieves. Then Marjina tries to kill Abu Hasan, but he tricks her and runs away with her to the hideout. In the climax, Alibaba rescues Marjina, kills Abu Hasan and in the end all is well.

Homi Wadia, the Director, was a man of principles. He separated from his brother on the issue of making the type of films and formed his own film company and studio – Basant Pictures. He was in love with his Heroine The Fearless Nadia. When his mother objected and opposed this marriage, he waited till the death of his mother in 1961 and then married Nadia, when they both were in their 50’s. Disgusted with the illegal strike in his studio, he closed his studio but did not compromise.

Homi Wadia (22 May 1911 – 10 December 2004) was a film director and producer in Bollywood (Hindi cinema). He was the co-founder of Wadia Movietone productions, established in 1933 and later after leaving Wadiatone, he founded Basant Pictures in 1942. In a career spanning five decades, he directed over 40 films, including Hunterwali (1935), Miss Frontier Mail (1936), Diamond Queen (1940) and fantasy film Hatim Tai (1956). He was also a founding member of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India, established in 1954. Homi Wadia was married to actress and stunt woman Fearless Nadia. Homi was the younger brother of JBH Wadia, who was himself a movie director.

Wadia was from a Parsi family, and his ancestors came from the shipbuilding family, Wadia family (Wadia Group) originally from Surat in Gujarat state of western India, which also built the British-wartime ship HMS Trincomalee (1817). His ancestors moved to Bombay in the 18th century. After completing his schooling, at age 16, he joined college for a day, but decided instead to join films, and started assisting his elder brother, director JBH Wadia.
Homi Wadia had a film career spanning 5 decades where he started as a cinematographer in Lal-e-Yaman (1933), the year he co-established Wadia Movietone with his elder brother JBH Wadia, film distributor Manchersha B. Billimoria, and brothers Burjor and Nadirsha Tata. However Tata brothers left the partnership within three years, the company continued production of film, documentaries and newsreels from its studios by Lowjee Castle, Mumbai, Wadia family mansion of his great grandfather Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia, a noted shipbuilder, who founded the Wadia Group in 1736. The company even had its logo as a ship, honouring their family legacy.

The last film made by the company was Raj Nartaki (1941) under the direction of Madhu Bose, thereafter V. Shantaram bought the studio in 1942 and established Rajkamal Kalamandir in the premises. Homi Wadia, who worked as a director of the company, went on to establish Basant Pictures in the same year, though initially as a film production house. Subsequently, he established a film studio under the same banner in 1947, which functioned till 1981. Eventually he progressed as an movie director, producer and also a drama actor and founded Basant Pictures (Basant Studios) Homi is particularly famous for his movies along with Nadia namely Hunterwali, Miss Frontier Mail and Hatim Tai. As a Director his first film was Veer Bharat-1934 and the last film was The Adventures of Allauddin-1979.

In 1981, he got into a labour dispute with union leader Datta Samant, unable to take on the dispute, he decided to quit filmmaking and closed down Basant Studios. He continued to live in Mumbai after his retirement. Even till late in his life, he remained active, and even after his wife Nadia died in 1996, he regularly visited Basant theatre in Chembur. He died at the age of 93, in Mumbai in 2004.

Today’s song is a comedy duet. Actor Maruti and Sharda Deulkar enacted this song on the screen. Interestingly, this song was also used again in the film Diler daku-1957 by Mohd. Shafi. Enjoy this song….

Ten songs (out of eleven) have already been covered. That leaves us with one song to be covered. Here is that song. This song is sung by S Balbir, Shamshad Begam, male and female chorus. Only audio of the song is available. Lyrics are by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. Lyrics contain some words that were commonplace those days but are no longer in use so many people born in recent years may not be familiar with these words, viz tincture, haiza, angeethhi etc.

From the lyrics, it appears top be a nok-jhonk song between the two genders, possibly picturised as a qawwaali. Music is composed by Dhaniram.

Only audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, all the songs of “Daak Babu”(1954) have been covered in the blog. The movie thus gets YIPPEED in the blog.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Khoj-1953. A total of 3 films were made with the same title Khoj, in 1953, 1971 and 1989.

Long time back, I don’t exactly remember when, I had read in an English book on Psychology that as a rule, 7 people in this world are mirror images of each others – which means they look exactly like each others ! I could hardly believe it. The book further said that this does not include twins- because they naturally look alike mostly. This made their earlier statement more intriguing.

Few years passed and one day, one of my friends told me that he had seen a doctor in Nashik, who looked exactly like me ! I was stunned. He had brought that doctor’s name and address etc, should I desire to meet him. Sure, I was keen on it. So, one fine day I telephoned that doctor in Nashik and spoke to him expressing my desire to meet him. I also explained the purpose of my meeting him. He agreed. I went to Nashik along with my wife. By coincidence, that doctor’s first name was also Arun ! I went at the appointed date and time, to his residence, since he didn’t want me to meet him in his clinic.

Both of us were shocked to see each other. There was a striking resemblance in both of us. His and my wife were also amazed to note the similarity. After spending some time with them, we returned to Bombay. Within a few months I came to know that my Look-Alike from Nashik had migrated to USA for good ! I, somehow, had a strange feeling of relief. Not that it made any difference actually.

Why I remembered all this now is because today’s film Khoj-1953 had a storyline based on Look-Alikes. Imagine, remember and count yourself how many films,in any language or all languages together you must have seen till today, having stories of “Humshakal” ? Look Alikes are a very favourite subject of our filmmakers. But then even in Hollywood there were so many films made on this theme. Leave aside films, there are novels and dramas based on this theme. Starting with Shakespeare’s “Comedy of Errors”, based on the original Latin story, one novel I remember offhand is “Prisoner of Zenda” written in 1894 by Anthony Hope. There was a Black and White film in 1937 on this novel. Before that there were 2 silent films, in 1913 and 1922. I have seen this film made in 1952, in which Stewert Granger and Deborrah Kerr had acted. James Mason was the Villain minister in this film. Then there was another film in 1979 and a modern version in 1984.

In India, one can keep counting endlessly the number of films made on Look Alikes in almost every language, sometime or the other. There were many such films from the Southern languages. One famous old film was Nishan-1949, starring Ranjan in a double role. Original Tamil film was remade in many languages, including Hindi. Hindi too had so many such films, including my favourite ” Angoor’-1982 featuring Sanjeev kumar and Deven verma having double roles. There were many famous films like Raam aur Shyaam, Seeta aur Geeta, Chaalbaaz, Don etc.

Here are some details as to how many double role films were done by some actors. The list consists of many actors , but I am giving only a few names for information. The number of films are mentioned against each actor…….

Actor Number of movies with double roles
Amitabh Bachchan 15
Kader Khan 14
Rajesh Khanna 11
Mithun Chakraborti 11
Govinda 10
Jeetendra 9
Akshay Kumar 6
Hema Malini 6
Rishi Kapoor 6
Sanjeev Kumar 6
Shridevi 6

etc etc.

These details are till 2014, taken from an online site. Film Awara Shehzada -1933 was the first film to have a double role of Shahu Modak.

The story of film Khoj-1953 was……..

It was a miracle of nature that two young men-Suraj and Ranbir, not having any blood relation, were look-alikes. Suraj was a rich and noble man, whereas Ranbir was a well known, ‘wanted’ dacoit. After knowing this similarity, Ranbir plans to take advantage of this.

Suraj loves a simple girl Kusum and is engaged to her. Ranbir sends his moll Mohini to lure Suraj. As expected Suraj falls prey to her and marries her. The very next day, Suraj is arrested by police on suspicion that he is Ranbir. Now all his wealth is in the hands of Ranbir. Next day, Suraj escapes from jail and goes to Kusum, who tries to save him and hide him. However the goons of Ranbir trace him and take him to their hideout. Ranbir decides to kill him now.

Meanwhile Mohini repents and tells everything to the Police before she is killed by Ranbir. However the Police reach his hideout, kill Ranbir in the encounter, find and save Suraj. Now Suraj and Kusum get united and All is well.

The cast of the film Khoj-1953 was Shammi, Mahipal, Satish, Habeeb, Helen, Omkar Devaskar, Rajni and others. In this cast, do you know who Omkar devaskar was ? He was one who could have changed Hindi film history, but the Luck was not in his favour.

BOMBAY- The Mayanagari, sometimes showed its Maya. It picked up unsuspecting souls and bestowed upon them the fame and a name as Leading actors, singers, Directors ,Lyricists or whatever in films. Thus, a scholarly young man, standing in a bus queue in Madras is picked up and made a Hero of more than 40 films as ” Ranjan”. It also made an onlooker of shooting from the crowds of a studio, the famous and rich Hero of more than 50 films as ” Motilal”. An ordinary Motor Mechanic becomes a well known film Director in various languages and is called ” Sarvottam Badami’. A poor motor mechanic working in a garage becomes an All India famous poet-Lyricist and Producer Director called ” Gulzar.” The same Maya made a casual singer in Hindu Colony, Dadar in Bombay a famous playback singer of repute, when her singing was heard by a passing Music Director Hanuman Prasad, just by chance. She was known later as ” Geeta Dutt”. There are many such examples.

There are many such number of “Accidental Stars”, but the same Maya also scuttled the Golden chances of capable aspiring small timers to become big stars. At Least two glaring examples are known. One is very well known to many, but the other is hardly known to anyone. First case is, Mehboob Khan was almost selected as Hero of India’s First Talkie film ” Alam Ara”-31. Even suitable costumes for him were also made ready, but then Maya played the trick and his name was pushed back, in favour of the more famous Master Vithal, to cover up the possible risk of the failure of the First talkie, which was an experiment. Nevertheless Mehboob Khan became a significantly notable producer, director and studio owner of India, is another matter.

The other case of how Maya scuttled the chances of fame, name and career of a small-time actor who was on the verge of becoming a big star, is not known to most people. Now, take a look at the cast of today’s film as mentioned in this post. Do you find a name Omkar Devaskar ? Well, this is his story….

Omkar Devaskar was born on 24-1-1911 in MP (Central provinces then). After his schooling, he ran away to Bombay to seek employment and got a job as an ‘ Assistant’ in the Imperial Film company. His job was to do any work given to him. The salary was Rs.20 pm. When he saw the film shootings, he had an urge to act in films. One day, he asked Ardeshir sheth about it and he started getting uncredited small roles in silent films.

The Imperial company decided to make a Talkie for the First time in India, mainly because of Dadasaheb Torne (Ramchandra Gopal Torne). It was he who prompted Irani to be the first in India to make a Talkie. Torne was his Manager for both Jyoti studio and Imperial Film Company. Torne was also an agent for Cinema Equipment imported from England and Germany. Torne imported Sound recording equipment and the company sent a German Engineer to explain and teach the technique to Indian technicians.

They first wanted to test the sound recording machine by recording and filming a song. Who would sing ? No one was ready to become the sacrificial goat. Irani saw Omkar and asked him to sing before the machine. A terrified Omkar lamely protested, but he had no choice. Ultimately he was ‘ made up’ and the recording and filming started. Omkar sang a Thumri, ‘ Pyare Rasia Bihari’. Everybody present, including Irani, were stunned with the sweet voice and the ease of his singing style. It came off extremely well. About 500 feet of film was shot flawlessly. Irani was so impressed that he toyed with the idea of giving Omkar the first song in the film Alam Ara. Maya swiftly went into action. Unfortunately the recording was not saved, otherwise it would have been the first film song to be filmed and Omkar the First ever singer actor to do so. But Alas ! This is called the stroke of misfortune ! Destiny had slated this honour for W.M.Khan.

Missing this chance, anyway, Omkar became an actor and singer. His first talkie film was Imperial’s “Sati Anusuya”-33. He sang 3 songs in the film ” Noor E Iman “-33, besides acting in it. Omkar acted in about 30 films in all. His last film was, perhaps, Khoj-1953. He sang 14 songs in 6 films. His last song came in the film Jagriti-49. Omkar was a regular actor in many Marathi films too. ( I have used information from Music beyond boundaries by Ashok Ranade and Marathi Cinema in Retrospect by Sanjit Narwekar, MuVyz,HFGK and my own notes, for this write up.)

Today’s song is the 4th song of this film on this Blog. It is a duet by Afzal Hussain and Sulochana Kadam. Enjoy….

Today’s song is from the Mythological film – Mohini-1957.

During the decade of the 1950s, maximum religious, Bhakti pradhan and Mythological films were made. Among them, most had roots in some or the other Puranas, Ramayan or mahabharat, but there were also films having the tag of ‘ Mythological’ film, which had absolutely no connection whatsoever, known or unknown, to any of the mythological stories. I have read all 18 Puranas, Ramayan and Mahabharat. I do not claim to know each and everything from there, but even in the film booklet no mention is made of the source of the story. Film Mohini is one such film. With 100s of Gods and 1000s of stories, it is easy to make up a story resembling any genuine story. Looks like that, like Arabian Night stories, here too adulteration has entered ! A simple trick of adding a lot of magic scenes can enable a story to become a Mythological or Arabian Night story !

Let us take a look at the story of the film Mohini-1957. Actually, the name Mohini misled me to enter the theatre thinking it was a story of Mohini-Bhasmasur, from the Shiv Puran.

Raja Ugrasen goes for hunting and ends up getting into the web of a sorceress Sundari whom he brings to his palace to marry. She is gracefully accepted by the existing Maharani who is pregnant with a child, who,it is predicted, will be a mighty emperor. Sundari is jealous and instigates the king to have her killed. The killers take maharani to the jungle, take out her eyes as a proof and leave her alive. She is found and nursed by a Bhil king. She delivers a baby boy. She works as a maid. The boy grows to be Vikram, now 18 years old and raring to take king’s revenge.

Meanwhile, Princess Sugunavati is kidnapped and the king announces 1/2 kingdom and the princess to the finder. Pratap,a friend of Vikram makes a magic flying horse,on which Vikram goes and finds the princess. The king is happy and makes him the Senapati. Sundari recognises him and plans to kill him, but the princes who is in his love foils the plan and saves Vikram. Together, Vikram and Princess expose Sundari to the King. King is angry and executes Sundari. The Maharani is called back with honour and needless to mention that Vikram and princess get married.

From the story itself, it is clear that no God is involved and that the film’s category is misleading. It should have been either ‘Imaginary’ (काल्पनिक ) or ‘Costume’ film. The film was produced by Ramesh Vyas, directed by Ramanlal Desai and the MD was N.Datta. The cast of the film was Shahu Modak, Nirupa Roy, Shakila, Rajkumar, Roopkumar, Rooplaxmi, krishna kumari, Yeshwant dave, H.Prakash etc. There were 2 Child artistes – Raj Kumar and Roop Kumar. This Roop Kumar was none other than the famous and cute Daisy Irani.

Daisy Irani was a Parsee. her parents were from the middle class, but her mother Peri Irani was highly money minded. They were 5 siblings – Menaka, Bunny, Sarosh, Daisy and Honey Irani. Bunny irani was living with his aunt from his childhood as she had no issues. The mother wanted to make money and hence she employed all the 4 children into films as child actors, not caring for their education or future. Thus, not only their childhood was spent under the arc lights but they did not get any formal education. A teacher used to teach them whenever they were available. However they never developed interest in learning. When their child actor stage ended, they could not do anything else.

Menaka Irani was married to Kamran Khan, a stunt actor who turned to direction and later on to production, leading to becoming an alcoholic when he failed everywhere. To run the family, a one time heroine, Menaka had to work as a Housekeeping staff in Hotel Sea Rock in Mumbai. Her children Farah khan and sajid Khan joined film line and became reasonably successful.Farah was Choreographer and then a director.

Daisy Irani became a chain smoker. After her husband K.K.Shukla died in 1993, her children were small. She became a film story writer lkike her husband. Honey Irani married Javed Akhtar, who divorced her to marry Shabana Azmi. Honey had to stay in just one room provided by Menaka, her sister, with her 2 children Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar. Sarosh, after doing child roles, studied upto tenth class and joine his brother Bunny’s construction business. When that colapsed, both started looking after their Irani Hotel and bakery B.Merwan in Bombay.

This is how the lives of most child actors were spoiled by their greedy parents. Most child actors did not succeed as adult actors. Take the case of popular child actor Junior mehmood, who died of Cancer, recently in a very pitiable condition. The other child actor in the film – Rajkumar was a little better, but he too suffered when child roles ended and when he was not getting adult roles.

There were 5 Rajkumar s in the industry at the same time. The first was Kannada Hero Dr. Rajkumar. However, he never worked in any Hindi film, so no confusion about him.The second was the famous Dialogue master Raaj Kumar ‘Jaani’. Third was Rajkumar Gupta ( from Ranchi), who was the main character in popular film Jagriti-54. He never worked again in any film. Fourth was Raj(u) Kumar, a junior artist, who did minor roles- mostly uncredited-in films like Shri 420-55, Jagte Raho-56. Dilli ka Thug-58, Aaj aur kal-63, Ziddi-64 etc etc..The fifth was this Rajkumar, who mostly worked in Religious and Mythological films. His name was Rajkumar Khatri.

Rajkumar khatri was born on 24-11-1938 at Lahore. His real name was Rajendra kumar S. Khatri. He started as a child artiste in films like Janmashtami-50, Jai Mahakali-51 and Insaan-52. His first film as an adult was Shuk Rambha-53, in which he played the role of young Shukdev. He was a fine actor, not extraordinary, but there was something special about his screen presence. Apart from his boyish looks, he had an unspoken charm and emanated an inherent goodness. In his second film “Tulsidas”-54 he played the role of Shri Ram. He was hardly 15-16 year old then. This must be the youngest and most boyish looking Shri Ram ever seen on the screen !

Rajkumar Khatri acted in 61 films, mostly Religious and Mythological films (47 to be precise). Not that he did not work in any social films, but such films were less. He was seen in films like Sautela Bhai-62, Nai umer ki nai fasal-65 etc etc. Due to his young looks, boyish face and innocent looks, he was generally given roles of younger brother. As Laxman, he acted in 7 films. His last film was probably Chintamanee Surdas-87.

His selected Filmography was
Janmashtami-(1950), Jai Mahakali-(1951), Shuk Rambha (1953), Tulsidas (1954), Prabhu Ki Maya (1955), Sant Tukaram (1955), Ayodhyapati (1956), Amar Singh Rathod (1957), Mohini (1957), Neel Mani (1957), Maya Bazaar (1958), Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan (1959), Maya Machhindra (1960), Jai Chitod (1961), Sampoorna Ramayan (1961), Sautela Bhai (1962), Dooj Ka Chand (1964), Goswami Tulsidas (1964, Awadhi), Mahabharat (1965), Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal (1965), Shree Ram Bharat Milap (1965), Badrinath Yatra (1967), Ram Bhakt Hanuman (1969), Sati Sulochana (1969), Bhagwan Parshuram (1970), Veer Ghatotkach (1970), Brahma Vishnu Mahesh (1971), Hanuman Vijay (1974), Maya Machhindra (1975), Har Har Gange (1979), Mahabali Hanuman (1981), Sant Gyaneshwar (1982), Sati Naag Kanya (1983), Chintamanee Surdas (1988).

In the mid 80s, when film offers became scarce, he joined Prakash Mehra as an assistant. He used to live in Chembur. He was known as Chhota Rajkumar in the industry. He worked with Prakash Mehra for a long time, as Assistant Director and as also his P.A. Reportedly, he died in September 2014. No further information on him was available. (Thanks to maitrimanthan.com for some information and my own notes.)

Today’s song is sung by Shamshad Begum. Enjoy….

Today’s song is from the film Captain Kishore-1957. The film was made by Wadia Movietone and it was directed by J.B.H.Wadia. The music was by the Music Magician- Chitragupt. Out of the total 7 songs, 6 are already discussed here. Today’s song is the last and final song from this film.

The cast of the film was Suresh, Shashikala, Roopmala, Shaikh, Mirza Musharraf, Tun Tun,Azeem and many others. The title of the film has a resemblance to another film- Captain Kishori-1940, in which Lalita pawar was in the lead role. The word ” Captain” seems to be a favourite of film producers. These titles had started from the first decade of the Talkie films. The list of such films is….

Name of movie Year of release
Captain Veerendra 1936
Captain Kirtikumar 1937
Captain Kishori 1940
Captain Kishore 1957
Captain India 1960
Captain Sheroo 1963
Captain Azaad 1967
Captain Barry 1984
Captain Prabhakar 1992
Captain Shiva 1996
Captain Bhavani 1999

There was one film Lieutenant-1944 and one Majorsaab-1998. So much for the Army ranks. The Air Force was spared. The Navy gave 2 films, Commander-1959 and 1981.

HFGK mentions that today’s film is a Social film. However, looking at its story and its cast, it seems to be more of a Costume/Action/Stunt film. The story is….

The story is set in a kingdom, before India got independence. The senapati of the army of Rajnagar, Balwant Singh, kills the king with the desire to rule the kingdom. He throws the blame of the king’s murder on a fictitious, imaginary person called Captain Kishore. When he wants to kill the Boy Prince, he is saved by a mysterious masked man calling himself Captain Kishore ! While taking the prince, he sees the sleeping Princess, Kiran, with a book of poems in her hand. He likes and recites a few poems. She wakes up and starts shouting. Her security man Buddu Singh and his fiancee Dolly, the dancer, try to stop him, but he escapes with the boy.

Leela, cousin of Kiran, loves Kishore and arranges for him to work in the palace as a Munshi. Kiran comes to meet Leela and falls in love with Kishore, but she suspects that Kishore loves Leela. Meanwhile Balwant Singh sees them and is about to kill Kishore when the Boy Prince saves him and they escape. Now Balwant Singh forces Kiran to marry him. In the celebration, Dolly starts dancing. Kishore, Boy Prince and a small army come there. Balwant tries to shoot Kishore, but Leela comes between them and dies while saving Kishore. Balwant snatches Boy Prince and runs away in a car, with Kishore following in another car. At one railway crossing, Boy Prince jumps but gets stuck on rails and becomes unconscious. Kishore jumps on a running train and going to the engine front, picks up Prince in time to save him. Balwant Singh’s car falls into a valley and he dies.

Boy Prince becomes the king. Captain Kishore weds Kiran and becomes Army Chief cum Vazir. All is well. Film ends and the audience goes home.

I have seen this film and I felt that the hero-Suresh as well as the heroine – Shashikala were not comfortable in their roles, because of the type of the film. They had never acted in an action/ stunt film or worn such costumes, possibly. I wonder how and why these actors were selected in the first place.

Iun India’s Hindi film history Wadia Movietone stands first to introduce, establish and popularise the genre of Stunt and Action films. Fearless Nadia’s contribution is, ofcourse, one of the major points in it.. The second number should go to Master Bhagwan.

Wadia Movietone was a noted Indian film production company and studio based in Mumbai, established in 1933 by Wadia brothers J. B. H. Wadia and Homi Wadia. It was most known for stunt, fantasy and mythological films, including Hunterwali (1935).

Wadia brothers belonged to a Parsi family, and their ancestors came from the ship building Wadia family (Wadia Group), originally from Surat, which also built the British wartime ship HMS Trincomalee (1817). Their ancestors moved to Bombay in the 18th century. It was co-established in 1933, by producer and screenwriter J. B. H. Wadia, his younger brother director Homi Wadia, film distributor Manchersha B. Billimoria, and brothers Burjor and Nadirsha Tata.

However, the Tata brothers left the partnership within three years. The company then continued production of film, documentaries and newsreels from its studios near Lowjee Castle, Mumbai, the Wadia family mansion, owned by their great-grandfather Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia, a noted shipbuilder, who founded the Wadia Group in 1736. The company even had its logo as a ship, honouring their family legacy. Their company made Hunterwali (1935) starring Fearless Nadia, Boman Shroff and John Cawas, which became a surprise hit and its first big success. Thereafter, they made several films based on the Arabian Nights.

However, by the end the 1930s, the genre of stunt, fantasy and mythology films which dominated the early films, was beginning to fail and the company ran into heavy losses, after they invested into ambitious projects which flopped. The last film made by the company was Raj Nartaki (1941) under the direction of Madhu Bose. Thereafter, the studio premises were up for sale; V. Shantaram hired the studio in 1942 and established Rajkamal Kalamandir on the premises. Homi Wadia, who worked as a director of the company, went on to establish Basant Pictures in the same year, though initially as a film production house. Subsequently, he established a film studio under the same banner in 1947, which functioned till 1981.

Wadia Movietone made films in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bangla, Sindhi and Gujarati. The first songless Talkie film of India, ” Naujawan”-1937 was made by wadia. The first English film ” Court Dancer’-1941 (Raj Nartaki in Hindi and Bangla) was also made by Wadia. From 1933 to 1942 Wadia made 42 films. After the split, JBH Wadia continued to make films but slowly, in the name of Wadia Movietone and from 1943 to 1973, he made 24 films. Their first film was Laal-E-Yaman-1933 and the last film was a Gujarati film ” Walo Nawori”-1973.

Riyad Vinci Wadia, grandson of J.B.H. Wadia inherited the studio in 1990. He is most known for his film, Bomgay (1996) and a documentary on Nadia, Fearless: The Hunterwali Story. He died in 2003.

The film was directed by one of the 2 brothers who owned Wadia Movietone – J.B.H.Wadia. Looking at his biography, it seems he lost interest in the film making after the brothers split in 1942. He took more interest in social activities and film industry affairs. Jamshed Boman Homi Wadia (13-9-1901 to 4-1-1986) Hindi director and producer born in Surat, Gujarat. Literary scholar at Bombay University. Worked in a bank while taking a law degree. Major supporter and biographer of Communist (usually referred to as ‘radical humanist’) reformer M.N. Roy. Founder member of Radical Democratic Party of India (1937).

He Combined literary and political interests with fascination for US western and stunt films. Wrote and co-produced his first film (Vasant Leela, 1928) with Kohinoor cinematographer and producer G.S. Devare. Together they ran the Devare Film Laboratory and the Wadia Film Exchange. Established Young United Players (1931) with his brother Homi and made five silent films inspired by the Fairbanks-Niblo Mark of Zorro (1920), including one direct adaptation, Diler Daku (1931).

With support from Manchersha B. Bilimoria, set up Wadia Movietone (1933) with his brother Homi. Personally made the Yeshwant Dave and Boman Shroff silents but functioned mainly as studio boss and scenarist. Best-known Wadia Movietone work, the Fearless Nadia films, were made by Homi Wadia, who also married the star. Although the Wadia signature is linked to the stunt genre, J.B.H.’s work is marked by his political adherences and the conventions of Parsee theatre (e.g. the Jal Khambatta films, Lal-e-Yaman, Baag-e-Misar, Kala Gulab). His Naujawan (Aspi, 1937) was a rare commercial feature without ‘song cushions’.

When he insisted on prioritizing social themes in the production programme, Homi left (1942). Influential documentary and newsreel producer (e.g. his Short Films of Musical Value, recording musical performances by the likes of Mallika Pukhraj and the child Kumar Gandharva). President of the Film Advisory Board (1941-2). Unsuccessful Indian Screen Gazette, modelled on Pathé Gazette, with early work by P.V. Pathy.

Collaborated with ad agency D.J. Keymer on British war-effort films (1940). Apparently made three 30’ thrillers for US television in 1949. Also made All Under the Heaven by Force, directed by Zul Velani (1964), condemning China’s 1962 military operations in India. Established J.B.H. Wadia Publications, issuing e.g. M.N. Roy’s New Humanism and wrote M.N. Roy: The Man (1983). Wrote his autobiography, Those Were The Days (unpublished, 1977), and Gujarati poetry. Excerpts of his silent film Vantolio survive.

1932: Sinh Garjana, Toofan Mail, 1933: Lal-e-Yaman (Director, Writer), Vantolio, 1934: Baag-e-Misar, Bag-E-Misar, Kala Gulab, Vaman Avatar, 1935: Desh Deepak (Director, Writer), Hind Kesari (Writer), Hunterwali (Writer), Noor-e-Yaman, 1936: Miss Frontier Mail(Writer), 1937: Hurricane Hansa (Writer), Naujawan (Writer), Toofani Tarzan (Producer, Writer), 1940: Diamond Queen (Writer), 1942:Jungle Princess (Producer), Muqabala (Writer, Presented by, Story), 1943: Aankh Ki Sharam (Producer), 1944: Krishna Bhakta Bodana, 1951: Madhosh, 1953: Husn Ka Chor, 1954: Alibaba and the Forty Thieves (Producer, Writer), 1955: Veer Rajputani, 1956: Hatimtai(Writer), 1957: Captain Kishore, 1958: Zimbo (Writer), 1960: Duniya Jhukti Hai (Director, Producer), 1966: Tasveer, 1971: Saaz Aur Sanam (Director, Producer) ( based on information from Encyclopedia of Indian Cinema, with thanks.)

Here is the last and final song of this film, sung by Geeta Dutt- my favourite singer. With this song, the film gets YIPPEED, with all its songs covered.

Today’s song is a video song of a dance number from the film Alibaba aur 40 chor-1954.

The names Alibaba, Aladdin and Sindbad immediately revive the memories of childhood. Readers in the age group of 65+ will surely drift into Nostalgia. These are some of the popular stories from the ‘Arabian Nights’, one of the Bestsellers of the world. There is hardly any language with a script, which has not translated these stories into their literature. Out of the 1001 stories of the Arabian Nights, the other popular stories were that of Hatimtai and Gul-E-Bakavali.

Several generations grew up reading, enjoying and dreaming about these stories in their school days, all over the world. (I can not vouch for the recent generation, however). Owning these books was a treasure. No wonder filmmakers from all over the world made films on these stories and raked a lot of money. Places like Basra, tatar and Baghdad etc. became known in every country. Grandfathers all over the world made their grandchildren go to sleep while telling them these stories.

India was also not far behind other countries and many films were made on these stories. Not only this, the story departments of studios had such fertile imaginations that they created sons and daughters to all these heroes, which were not in the original stories. Thus, a variety with sureshot masala was added to such films.

It started with silent films. Films on Alibaba were made in 1927 (2), Aladdin- 1927 (20, 1928 and 1930, Sindbad in 1930 (2). After Talkie films started, films were made on Alibaba in 1940, 1946, 1976, Alibaba and 40 thieves in 1932, 1954 (2), 1966, 1977,1980 and 2004. Films on Aladdin in 1933, 1935, 1945, 2009, On Aladdin and magic lamp in 1938, 1952 (2), 1958, 1966,1978, 1982 (20. Films on Aladdin ka Beta in 1939 and 1955, Aladdin and Laila in 1941 and 1957 and Aladdin ki Beti in 1949. On Sindbad in 1946 (20, 1952 (2), 1965 and 2000. As a Bonus Sindbad ki Beti-19658 was also made. The top was, the film Sindbad- Alibaba and Aladdin-1965, sort of ALL IN ONE !

There were -for the first and last time- two Melody makers were the music Directors. Tripathi was an old horse in such types of films. He was a favourite of Wadia Brothers, who made most of these films. Tripathi had a studied knowledge of Arabian style music. Both MDs presented a bouquet of 8 lovely songs in this film. In the starcast, you will find the name Sharda. She was Sharda Deulkar, younger sister of singer lalita Deulkar, who was Sudhir Phadke’s wife. Shakila and Mahipal looked like they were born to act in such films only. Barring a few social films, Shakila was mainly seen in Costume and action films. Having worked with A class actor Dev Anand in film C.I.D.-1956 also did not help her much.

Mahipal or Mahipal Singh or Mahipal Bhandari (24 November 1919 – 15 May 2005) was a film actor who worked in Hindi cinema mostly in stunt films like Parasmani, Zabak, Cobra Girl, Jantar Mantar, Arabian nights themed movies such as Alibaba, Aladdin And The Wonderful Lamp, Roop Lekha, Sunehari Nagin, and Hindu mythological movies like Sampoorna Ramayan, Ganesh Mahima, Veer Bhimsen, Jai Santoshi Maa. He is known for playing the iconic role of Lord Vishnu, and his two avatars, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna in lot of various puranic, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata Purana based movies, besides playing Tulsidas and Abhimanyu, and is also best known as the lead in V. Shantaram’s Navrang (1959), and the songs “Tu Chhupi Hai Kahan Me Tadapta Yahan” and “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi”. He acted in several well-known films of the 1950s and 1960s including V. Shantaram’s Navrang (1959) and Babubhai Mistry’s Parasmani (1963).

He was born on 24-11-1919 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where after his schooling, he graduated in literature from Jaswant Government College Jodhpur. Thereafter, he worked in the theatre before migrating to Mumbai in the early 1940s.
He made his film debut in the 1942 film Nazrana. However, the film didn’t work, thereafter he wrote lyrics for four films. He went on to work with directors such as Sohrab Modi and later with the Wadia Brothers, Homi Wadia and J. B. H. Wadia, however, it was his work with V. Shantaram that got him lasting acclaim. He worked in several mythological and historical films with actresses such as Nirupa Roy, Mala Sinha and even Meena Kumari.
Mahipal was never counted as an A category actor and so, leading actresses who started their careers with Mahipal in the lead were ashamed of revealing or accepting this fact. For example, In all her interviews, Mala Sinha always quoted “Rangeen Raten”-56 with Shammi Kapoor as her first film in Bombay. She was ashamed of revealing that in the film Riyasat-55, her Hero was Mahipal. She always hid this fact. Similarly, A grade Heroine Meena Kumari also had done several Mythological and costume films before Baiju Bawra took her high up and above other Heroines. Films like Shri Ganesh Mahima-50, Laxmi Narayan-51, Hanuman Paataal vijay-51 and Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-52 had Mahipal as her Hero. In her later years, she always hid her earlier film Heroes.

He also did a series of fantasy films based on Arabian Nights, including Alibaba and 40 Thieves (1954), Jennie (1953) ,Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag (1952) and Alibaba ka Beta (1955), which gave him popularity even in the Gulf countries. Later in his career, he switched to character roles, and appeared in films such as Jai Santoshi Maa (1975), a 1970s hit.

He wrote 13 songs in 4 films, namely Mali-44, Aap ki Sewa mein-47 (Lata Mangeshkar’s first playback song was written by Mahipal in this film), Mere Laal-48 and Adalat-48. Mahipal acted in 131 Hindi films. He had also worked in Marathi, Rajasthani and Assamese films. His first film was Nazrana-42 and the last film was Amar Jyoti-84….a career spanning 42 years. He worked with Shakila in 18 films, with Anita Guha in 11 films,With Shyama in 6 films, and in 4 films with Nirupa Roy. He worked with Meena Kumari in 4 films. He is the only actor in Mythological films who sang a song on screen in the role of Shri Ram, in the film Hanuman Pataal Vijay-1951.

He died in Mumbai of cardiac arrest, at the age of 86. He was survived by his wife Akkal Kunwar and daughters Sushila Jain and Nirmala Oswal. (Thanks to book Inhe na Bhulana by Harish Raghuwanshi ji and my notes).

Today’s song is the YIPPEE song, as all songs of this film get covered here with this song. Enjoy….
